Plate Tectonics
Earth has 15 plate tectonics. Each one interacts with another plate next to it. There are two types of plate tectonics: oceanic and continental. Plate boundaries are the places where plate tectonics meet. There are 3 plate boundaries: convergent, divergent, and transform. A convergent boundary is when two boundaries press up together and create mountains (continental- continental, oceanic- oceanic) or one subducts under the other to create trenches (oceanic- continental). A divergent boundary is when two plates are moving away from each other and create rifts (continental- continental) or mid ocean ridges (oceanic- oceanic). Finally, a transform boundary is when two plates scrape past each other horizontally. Transform boundaries tend to cause a lot more earthquakes than the other two.
There are also 3 chemical layers and 5 physical layers of Earth. The 3 chemical layers are the crust, mantle, and core. The 5 physical layers are the lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core.
